Electrification in Carrum DownsA suburb built on gas, and easy to take off it
Nearly every Carrum Downs home built between the 1980s and the 2000s came with the same three gas appliances: ducted heating in the roof, a storage hot water tank on an outside wall and a cooktop in the kitchen. Home electrification Carrum Downs style is therefore a fairly predictable job, which is good news, because predictable jobs can be planned properly.
The houses help too. A single storey under a tiled hip roof means there is room to work in the roof space, so the old gas ducts can come out and new R1.5 insulated ducts go in, rather than a new unit being bolted onto thirty-year-old flex. The same roof has broad, unshaded faces for solar, and the garage at one end gives a battery somewhere sensible to live, close to the board.
The board is where we start. Early 1980s switchboards often need replacing before a ducted system, a heat pump and an induction cooktop are added, while late 1990s boards usually have room. We check it at the first inspection and build the plan around it, as with the rest of our Carrum Downs work.
