Electrification in CheltenhamTwo ways Cheltenham heats, one way to finish
Cheltenham homes come off gas from one of two starting points. The postwar brick veneers mostly have ducted gas heating in the roof. The villa units, older weatherboards and many smaller homes have a gas wall furnace or space heater in the living room instead. Both usually sit alongside a gas storage hot water tank and a gas cooktop, and plenty of them run on a switchboard that predates all of it.
Home electrification Cheltenham style starts with that board. It is checked first and, where needed, replaced with one that has room for reverse cycle, a heat pump, induction, solar and a charger, so nothing has to be redone later. Then the heating: a brick veneer with a walk-through roof suits ducted reverse cycle on new R1.5 insulated ducts, while a unit or a wall-furnace home usually does better with a split in the living area and a multi-head for the bedrooms. Hot water goes to a heat pump in a day, and induction finishes the job.
The original hip roofs have room for a solid solar array to run it, while unit roofs are smaller and sometimes shared. We service Cheltenham from Somerville, about 40 minutes away, and the plan sits with the rest of our Cheltenham work.
