Electrification in DromanaThree kinds of Dromana house, three starting points
Electrifying a Dromana home depends on which Dromana home it is. The 1970s to 90s brick veneer houses back from the foreshore usually have ducted gas heating, a gas storage tank and a gas cooktop, all on mains gas. The 1960s and 70s beach houses often have a single gas space heater in the lounge and very little roof space. And the newer builds are already all-electric, because new Victorian homes no longer get a new gas connection.
For the first two, the home electrification Dromana owners ask us about is about replacing each gas appliance with something that costs less to run, in an order that makes sense. Reverse cycle heats for around a third of the running cost of gas heating, and a heat pump makes hot water with about a quarter of the energy of gas storage. The switchboard comes first, because older boards may not carry the new circuits without an upgrade.
For a new build the job is the other half: solar, a battery and an EV charger sized for a house that already runs on electricity, planned with the new switchboard. As more homes here become full-time, both conversations are getting more common. See what else we do in Dromana.
