Hot water in BerwickBig households, big draw on the tank
Hot water is a bigger deal in Berwick than in most suburbs because of who lives here. Four and five bedroom homes with teenagers, back-to-back showers in the morning and a dishwasher and washing machine running every day put real demand on the tank. A system sized for a couple will run cold by the third shower.
In the older estates such as Timbarra and Brentwood Park, built through the 1990s and 2000s, the original gas hot water is now at the age where it fails without much warning. The newest streets were built without a gas connection, so whatever the builder fitted is already electric, and the question there is whether it is an efficient heat pump or something cheaper to buy and dearer to run. Either way, the hot water systems Berwick owners ask us about are nearly always heat pumps.
A heat pump uses about a quarter of the energy of a gas storage unit to make the same hot water, and most Berwick homes have solar on a large roof to run it in the middle of the day. For a family of four to six we usually start at 270L to 300L, and go larger for bigger households. More on what else we do in Berwick.
